The Peace That Passes All Understanding

The Bible tells us, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;" (Philippians 4:6) Believers are not to fret or have any anxiety about anything no matter how big or small a situation may seem to be. God tells us what steps to take in order to to rid ourselves of fret or anxiety, ..."in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." God's Word then tells us the results that a believer will have when fret and anxiety are dealt as He has perscribed, "And God's peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
(Philippians 4:7 AMP)

Therefore the peace of God in a believers life is the result of praying (the prayer of faith or praying with faith) and obeying His Word. Philippians 4:6 tells us how to enjoy Philippians 4:7. A believer cannot circumvent verse 6 to receive what verse 7 promises and yet most believers will ask another believer(s) to pray for them so that they can have peace and not take it upon themselves to stand on Gods Word, pray and believe. Looking closely at verse 7 we see that it starts with the conjunction "and" which directly connects it to verse 6. So we cannot experience the "peace that passes all understanding" with applying verse 6.

However, as I have mentioned before, believers are in a constant battle with the opposing forces of darkness. You may pray and stand on God's Word in faith, receive His peace and then a day or so later find yourself dealing with fret and anxienty all over again. Well Praise the LORD the Bible tells us how to assault and destroy the thought that the devil will try to fill our minds with that breed fret and anxiety. Believers are to meditate on; Focus one's thoughts upon, esteem highly, recommend heartily, and practice fervently, these things...
  • Whatever things are true: All that is agreeable to Gods unchangeable and eternal truth...
  • Whatever things are noble: Superior in mind, character, ideals and morals...
  • Whatever things are just: That which is legally correct, agreeable to justice and righteousness...
  • Whatever things are pure: Purity of the mind, and body...
  • Whatever things are lovely: Attributes of beauty, harmony or grace in conduct and conversation...
  • Whatever things are of good report: Actions that are truly reputable and agreeable that are useful and profitable to all people...
  • If there be any virtue: That which conforms to a standard of right that promote the general good of mankind...
  • If there is anything praiseworthy: Things that are applaudable or worthy of high praise...
So once a believer gets to the place in their faith where they have the peace that passes all understanding, in order to keep it, they must reject negative thinking and fill their minds with the right things. In other words, God incredible peace is not going to be able to gurad your mind unless you think right. Remember this simple principle, right thinking produces right believing, right believing produces right confession and right confession products right actions.

"Open the gates, that the righteous nation which keeps the truth may enter in. You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength." (Isaiah 26:2-4) PTL

Do You Have Peace?

One of the benefits of redemption according to Isaiah 53:5 is not only having peace with God, "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1)
but also a deeper peace, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27)

The one side of peace is that through Christ the Father's wrath has been turned and by placing faith in Christ  man has right standing with the Father which is a wonderful thing indeed. But believers are to experience the peace that Jesus had during His earthly ministry as the Son of man. That peace is a tranquil, quieting and uninterrupted happiness of mind. The divine peace that Jesus Himself continuously experienced in God. This kind of peace gives no place to the tumultuous world around us. It is the kind of peace that we see in Matthew 8 where Jesus slept in the boat even when the waves were crashing on it and in it, but it is also the kind of peace that believers should constantly abide in.

Jesus continues to explain how different His peace is. "Not as the world gives", which is a false sense of hope and security when at any time natural disasters, economic chaos, wars, and all matter of trauma wait in the wings to manifest. The only time in the history of man that the world experienced peace was before the fall of man.

Next Jesus makes a very important statement which is key to living in the peace that the LORD has provided. "Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid;" Not only is He saying do not be agitated; distressed or fearful but also do not be afraid, cowardly and unbelieving. Being troubled and afraid will ruin ones life; these things neutralize faith and can breed physical and or mental sickness. It's not a matter of hoping to obtain the peace of Christ, it is a matter of receiving His peace by faith because His death purchased FULL redemption for ALL in which a part is "The peace the peace of God which surpasses ALL understanding".
